Moscow’s decision to support the independence of Donetsk and Luhansk, seems to have filled the cup of patience of Germany.
German Chancellor Olaf Scholz has ordered the economy ministry to block the Nord Stream II pipeline certification process, despite the importance this project has for its country.
“The decision sounds like a technician, but it is a necessary administrative step, so that the certification of the pipeline does not happen. “Without this certification, ‘Nord Stream II’ will not be able to function,” Scholz told reporters in Berlin.
Putin had earlier called on Defense Minister Sergei Shoygu to “ensure peace, as he put it, in the separatist regions of eastern Ukraine.” The fear now is that this could be used as a pretext for a wider Moscow attack on the neighboring country, on the border with which tens of thousands of Russian troops await only a signal from the Kremlin to launch the offensive.
Construction work on Nord Stream 2 began in May 2018 and was completed in September last year. Through the 1,200-kilometer pipeline, which consists of two pipelines, Germany is expected to receive more gas from Russia than ever before. But, it is already unclear when in these pipes, gas will really leak.
