On the 31st anniversary of the fall of Enver Hoxha’s bust, opposition leader Lulzim Basha, accompanied by DP deputy leader Agron Gjekmarkaj and parliamentary group leader Enkelejd Alibeaj, and other Democrat MPs, signed a petition for decommunization.
From “Skënderbej” square, Basha said that they will pledge not to allow the cult of the individual to be re-created among Albanians, as he asked the citizens to sign the petition.
“Let us still be a common family as we were 31 years ago, not just Democrats because this square was filled with everyone not just Democrats. There were also former members of the ALP who did not like the symbol of dictatorship and had given up the cult of the individual. We must also pledge that through our attitudes and actions we will never allow the cult of the individual, neither among us, nor among Albanians.“, Declared Basha.
February 20, 1991 marks the fall of the bust of former dictator Enver Hoxha. Today, it is 31 years since the popular revolt started by the student movement in December, culminated with the fall of Hoxha’s bust.
The initiator of this petition, Jonila Godole, demanded that the majority join in supporting and signing decommunization.
“It is not about witch-hunting, but about ending a process of the past. I very much hope that this petition will be signed by the majority colleagues“, said Godole.
In essence, the decommunization and justice initiative aims to stop the glorification of dictatorship and the use of communist symbols.
The petition envisages 6 requests for the Albanian Parliament.
