A court in India has sentenced 38 people to death for their role in a series of bombings in 2008 in the western region of Gujarat.
Fifty-seven people were killed and hundreds injured in the attacks, which took place in Ahmedabad, the commercial capital of the Gujarat region.
A court in Ahmedabad has sentenced 11 other people to life in prison.
Defendants can challenge sentences in a higher court.
On July 26, 2008, about 20 bombs exploded within an hour in residential centers, shopping malls, public transportation, and hospitals in Ahmedabad.
Some unexploded bombs were also found in those areas.
The Indian Mujahideen – then an unknown militant group – had claimed responsibility for the attacks via an email sent to several media outlets.
