The Portuguese Air Force intervenes to rescue the crew of a naval carrier that was engulfed in flames near the Azores in the Atlantic Ocean.
The Portuguese Marian said there were sailors on the Panamanian-flagged ship rescued from the fire that had erupted aboard. “Twenty-two crew members were taken to a hotel on Faial Island in the Azores,” a Portuguese navy spokesman told AFP.
The carrier had reported the fire which had brought the Portuguese navy air intervention from the islands, said port captain Joao Manuel Mendes.
He added that tugboats had set off from Gibraltar to tow the carrier, which was carrying luxury cars heading from Germany to the US.
Its Russian and Filipino crews were first evacuated on an oil carrier and then flown by military helicopter to the island.
