The US State Department said that Russia has expelled the Deputy Chief of Mission at the US Embassy in Moscow, Bart Gorman.
An embassy spokesman confirmed the eviction on Thursday, but gave no details as to why the move was made.
White House Deputy Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre called the eviction “unprovoked.”
Russia’s state-run RIA Novosti news agency said Gorman was second in command at the US Embassy in Moscow and had an open visa.
According to the agency, he has spent less than three years in Moscow. This development comes at a time of high tensions between Washington and Moscow, due to the accumulation of Russian troops in the border areas with Ukraine.
US officials, along with several other Western officials, warn that the Russian invasion of Ukraine may be imminent. Moscow denies having such plans.
