A sixteen-year-old boy arrives alone in Jerusalem wounded by the liberation war, a city so far from Baghdad where he comes from. Alone, he makes a living by distributing newspapers and delivering postal items by bicycle to the prime minister’s office, but without question dreaming of a completely different life.
The course of life of this boy named Nuri Halasxhi is incredible: his family settles in a village branched off among the sand dunes, where their neighbors were blind musicians; the father sends him to kibbutz to at least provide an apartment to move the family to the new place. He further has the burden of integrating into the capital.
The novel describes the sounds of the canon and the mourning of the blind, along with nostalgia for the homeland they left behind; the kibbutz accordion is heard, the nostalgia of which leads you to other places. This is the story of a dry boy – who, in order to become an Israeli, gives up the emphasis and does what is possible to integrate first in the kibbutz and then in the city – falls in love with a local girl, to whose parents he brings newspaper every morning. She is a rich girl, and aivarfanjak; but, will their love make them live happily and richly from now on?
Before he can discover this, he, Nur, has to walk a life path full of unexpected twists and turns, wandering between despair and hope, until he finds himself.
The novel “The Boy on the Bicycle” by the well-known Israeli writer Eli Amir is the first work of Israeli literature to be translated from Hebrew into Albanian. The Albanian reader is already familiar with the autobiographical novel “A Tale of Love and Darkness” by the well-known Israeli writer Amos Oz, which describes the period of the creation of the State of Israel from the perspective of a young Ashkenazi Jew from Eastern Europe. The novel “The Boy on the Bicycle” follows the same period from the point of view of an Iraqi Jewish Sephardic youth from the Arab East. Two different perspectives, from two different worlds, like the perspectives of East and West.
Two words about the author
Writer Eli Amir, after the successful works “The Rooster of the Sacrifice” and “The Emitter of Pigeons”, comes with this book, which is the most autobiographical and the most impressive – never before has he portrayed himself like this, and never with the first lzrael of the second decade of the creation of this state has not appeared, from such a special point of view.
