Doctors in Turkey launched the second day of the strike on Thursday, protesting against low wages and harsh working conditions, as the country faces the worst economic turmoil in two decades.
Members of the doctors’ union have stopped working and dry clinics have appeared on social networks in several cities and provinces.
“Doctors are on strike because they do not want to work under humane conditions,” the union said on Twitter, citing wages, long-term work and increased physical violence by patients.
A total of 316 health workers have been targeted in 190 separate attacks in 2021 in Turkey, according to data in the local union, Saglik-Sen.
On Wednesday, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said nearly 50 percent inflation was “temporary” and that citizens would have to carry the burden on their shoulders for a period.
The long working hours in the pandemic period have prompted many Turkish doctors to leave the country.
According to the Turkish Medical Association, more than 1,400 doctors left Turkey in 2021, compared to just 59 a decade ago.
