US Secretary of State Antony Blinken congratulated all citizens of Kosovo on the 14th anniversary of their citizenship.
In a statement issued by the US State Department, he said that Kosovo’s independence and sovereignty are irreversible, and that there must be an insistence on building democratic and inclusive institutions.
He expressed US support for the dialogue between Kosovo and Serbia, considering this process as a way to reach an agreement on normalization of relations, which should focus on mutual recognition.
The dialogue between Kosovo and Serbia, mediated by the European Union, started in 2011.
Blinken said that he also hopes that Kosovo takes its place in European and Euro-Atlantic institutions.
“As one of the newest democracies in the world, Kosovo and its citizens are rightly proud of the progress made in these 14 years. “On our part, we are proud of the support given to these efforts.”
Kosovo declared independence on February 17, 2008. According to the list published on the website of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Diaspora, 117 countries around the world have recognized it.
For 14 years of citizenship, Kosovo has been a member of several international organizations, including financial and sports.
Among them: the World Bank, the International Monetary Fund, the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development, the Olympic Committee, the European Football Federation and the World Football Federation.
Kosovo is not yet a member of the United Nations, the European Union, the Council of Europe, the World Trade Organization and others.
