The gruesome footage shows shocking moments as some fishermen record from afar a 5-foot-long shark attacking a beach swimmer to death while swimming on Sydney Beach, the first fatal attack of its kind in 60 years.
“Someone was just attacked by a shark,” a man was heard saying as he turned his cell phone over to the sea. “It’s a great white shark.”
The gruesome footage shows the great shark beating the water hard, attacking the unfortunate victim, as the color of the blood begins to dominate the water.
Emergency services went to Buchan Point beach yesterday around 4.35am but the victim had suffered catastrophic injuries and could not be rescued.
Witnesses said the shark about 5 meters tall attacked the swimmer wearing a water suit.
“A boy was swimming and the shark attacked him vertically,” witness Chris Linto told local television.
“We heard a scream and then it looked like a car had fallen into the water, then the fish started beating and dismembered the body, spreading blood everywhere,” he added.
Another witness who was fishing on the nearby rocks told ABC: “There were a lot of beatings in the water.”
Australian New South Wales police have not yet identified the deceased swimmer but have closed Little Bay beach.
An ambulance service spokesman said that unfortunately “the patient had suffered catastrophic injuries and the paramedics could do nothing.
Records show this is the first fatal shark attack in Sydney since 1963.
The local government says it has spent millions of dollars on technology to reduce shark attacks on beach shores.
Anti-shark nets have been installed on 51 beaches, in addition to shark surveillance drones and satellite tracking systems.
