Southampton seem to have developed a tactic, which they use only between the 60th and 70th minute, and that involves knocking down players.
Ralph Hasenhuttl’s team is one of the hardest working in the Premier League and this is also reflected in the results. To maintain the level, the stars of the “saints” must be hydrated and strictly maintain their nutritional levels.
A recent study by The Athletic shows that in 14 of Southampton’s 24 league games this season, a player has sought medical help during the second half.
It is believed that the reason is to allow other players to take an energy gel, which is filled with a form of carbohydrate.
The first case of this happened against Manchester United in August, when Che Adams crashed in the 61st minute. While he was receiving treatment on the field, his teammates traveled to the line of contact and received tactical instructions while taking their gel.
When the game resumed, Southampton managed to keep the 1-1 draw against the Red Devils.
This season’s statistics show that Southampton have scored nine goals after the 60th minute this season, but have conceded 14 more.
The tactic is only used when there is still something to play in the game, for example it was not used in the November 4-0 loss to Liverpool, as changing this result was almost impossible.
Adam Armstrong is the player who has been knocked down the most with four stops and apart from Tino Livramento, who collided with Brandom Williams of Norwich City, there have been all the strikers who have been knocked down.
Former Wolverhampton Wanderers sports physiotherapist Phil Hayward explained: “They will receive energy gel, which contains maltodextrin (a form of carbohydrate) that enters the bloodstream very quickly. You will start to see the reaction in about 10 minutes. I’m sure sports experts would recommend it and suggest when it should be done, and Hasenhuttl has given it the green light. This is a really good combined approach and shows how well they work.
Southampton, who are ranked 10th, tied the last game with Manchester United with the result 1-1.
