US President Joe Biden delivered a televised speech in which he stated that an attack on Ukraine is still possible and said that the US will defend to the end every inch of NATO territory.
“If Russia attacks in the coming days and weeks, the human cost to Ukraine will be immeasurable, and the strategic costs to Russia will also be enormous. If Russia attacks Ukraine, it will be met with massive international denunciation. The world will not forget that Russia chose death and unnecessary destruction. The attack on Ukraine will result in a self-inflicted wound. The United States, our allies and partners, will respond decisively“, Said Biden.
Biden added that the withdrawal of some Russian troops has not yet been verified, and although Putin said on Tuesday he was open to negotiations, the White House chief is not convinced. On the contrary, he says US analysts claim that the units he allegedly left were in fact still in a threatening position.
NATO defense ministers are meeting urgently in Brussels as efforts continue to avert a war in Ukraine.
The meeting, attended by Pentagon chief Lloyd Austin, comes amid escalating tensions in eastern Europe. The alliance is discussing its response to the 130,000 Russian troops that continue to be concentrated near the Ukrainian border.
The meeting comes after President Putin stated that Russia does not want another war, and is open to further dialogue with the US and its NATO allies.
The British Minister for the Armed Forces, James Heappey, said that he had received with very cautious optimism the claim that some Russian units were withdrawing from the border, however “we continue to remain extremely vigilant about Russia’s actions,” he said.
Earlier, British Prime Minister Boris Johnson said that “mixed signals” were coming from Russia on the prospect of an invasion, and that the situation was “not at all encouraging.”
