Hospital waste produced in two years of pandemic poses a serious threat to Albania.
In two years the pandemic has produced several times as much hospital waste in health centers and Covid hospitals as syringes, needles, masks, tampons for testing and others, some of which have often ended up in city waste bins.
Hospital waste must be disposed of through incineration and health and hospital centers subcontract private operators to carry out this process. But although the amount of waste has multiplied, budgets for it have not been increased and we often find hospital waste in urban waste bins or river banks.
Albania is notable for waste mismanagement, especially hospital ones which are considered dangerous as they become foci of infection. But although funds have been disbursed to manage the Covid situation so far, no one has thought about the waste management that the pandemic has produced.
