The most important U.S.-Canada border crossing has reopened but truck protest in Ottawa continues to grow as authorities try to maintain control.
The Ontario prime minister announced today that the country’s most populous province is canceling a request for a COVID-19 vaccination test within two weeks – “not because of protests” that have blocked Ottawaaccording to him, but because “we can do it from the progress of the virus.”
Today the important border crossing with the US, the Bridge Ambassador Bridge reopened by police intervention after a week of blockade but major truckers protest in Ottawa, continues.
Ontario Prime Minister Doug Ford said on March 1 the province lifted its vaccination test obligation to enter restaurants, gyms and sporting events, as the rise in infections has eased.
Ford did not talk about the timing of the lifting of the mask obligation in public.
“Today’s announcement is not about what is happening in Ottawa or Windsor, but to counter it,” Ford said, adding that he would support Prime Minister Justin Trudeau if he proposed other measures to quell the protest.
Trudeau says he has so far rejected calls to use the military but said “every option is on the table.
Demonstrations against coronavirus restriction of personal freedoms have blocked other US-Canada border crossings and inspired similar movements in France, New Zealand and the Netherlands. Caravans of protesting truckers are also being set up in the US.
The Canadian truckers’ protest has been blocking the city of Windsor and the capital Ottawa for two weeks, prompting the ouster of Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, who later said he was “isolating himself from Covid infection”.
