British Prime Minister Boris Johnson and US President Joe Biden agreed that there is still a “crucial window for diplomacy and for Russia to withdraw from its threats against Ukraine”, during a telephone conversation today.
The leaders of the USA and Great Britain have said that they have not lost any hope for a diplomatic solution to the crisis in Ukraine, but warn that the situation remains fragile.
In a 40-minute phone call, Joe Biden and Boris Johnson agreed that a deal was still possible despite a chorus of warnings of imminent Russian military action.
Russia has always denied plans to invade Ukraine, despite amassing more than 100,000 troops on the border.
On Monday, its foreign minister said diplomacy was “very exhausted”.
Many countries have urged their citizens to leave Ukraine, and the United States has said airstrikes could begin “at any time.”
But in their conversation, US President Joe Biden and UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson said they remained a “crucial window” for diplomacy, according to a Downing Street statement.
“Prime Minister and President Biden updated each other on their recent discussions with other world leaders,” the statement said.
“They agreed that it remains a crucial window for diplomacy and for Russia to withdraw from its threats against Ukraine.
“The leaders stressed that any further incursion into Ukraine would result in a protracted crisis for Russia, with far-reaching consequences for both Russia and the world,” the statement added.
Johnson is expected to hold a meeting with Cobra on Tuesday to discuss the UK’s response to the pressure.
