Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has issued a statement expressing fears about the possibility of a Russian invasion of Ukraine, but welcoming the power of his country.
The Ukrainian leader said he had heard US reports that Russia could invade on Wednesday, but said he would make February 16 a “day of unity.”
“We are afraid of the great war and the date of the military occupation has been set again,” Zelensky said in a statement.
“This is not the first time, but our state today is stronger than ever. “We want peace and we want to resolve all issues exclusively through negotiations.”
The president went on to predict that the Donbass and Crimea regions would return to control of Ukraine by diplomatic means.
He praised the Ukrainian military and said it was “many times stronger than eight years ago”.
Zelensky said that on February 16, “we will raise national flags, put on blue and yellow ribbons and show the world our unity.”
