Two well-known influencers of the Tik-Tok network from Tunisia have sparked outrage by publishing videos of illegal shipping across Europe and subsequent luxury shopping in European shopping malls.
21-year-old Chaima Ben Mahmoude, published the video where she greeted with her hand from the camera while sailing from Tunisia to Italy with her fiancé, in the dinghy full of immigrants.
In the picture she is seen smiling together with 23 other immigrants in the small boat in the middle of the Mediterranean Sea.
The center of the Mediterranean is one of the most dangerous sea lanes with more than 17,000 deaths and missing persons since 2014. Thousands of refugees are forced to navigate to escape poverty and war.
Ben Mahmoude – who has about 140,000 followers on the Tik-Tok network – says she was ‘forced’ to sail 188km after earning just over $ 100 as a hairdresser in Tunisia.
A month ago 18-year-old Sabee al Saidi, posted similar pictures of herself from an unsafe wooden boat making the same trip.
Both had arrived on the Italian island of Lampedusa, and then traveled to European capitals, taking pictures near the Eiffel Tower, driving BMW cars, before their photos were denounced and removed from the network.
After completing the two-week virus quarantine at the reception center in Italy, Ben Mahmoude said he understood the dangers of the cruise carried out in December.
But financial difficulties and the inability to obtain a visa forced him to sail to Europe, which in Tunisia is known as the ‘arc’.
The word means “burning the borders” and destroying personal documents before the dangerous trip.
“I can not find anything to do in Tunisia,” she said in an interview. “I have a certificate in hair styling but even when you find a job the salary was around $ 120 a month.
“You can do nothing with them.”
But despite the smiles in the posts, she reveals that the clenching was awful, especially when the boat was rocking hard.
“I was terrified, I saw death before me, the sea was very turbulent and there were big waves. “We prayed and prepared ourselves for death.”
