Brazilian government satellite data revealed that the number of trees cut down in the Brazilian Amazon in January was 5 times more compared to the same month last year, reports Anadolu Agency (AA).
According to a BBC news, the felling of trees in the Brazilian Amazon is taking on serious proportions.
Data from the Brazilian space agency showed that the country’s Amazon had 5 times more deforestation last month than in the same month a year ago, and is the highest logging rate since registrations began in 2015.
As reported in the news, deforestation reached a total of 430 square miles in January, while it was noted that the deforested area was 7 times larger than the Manhattan district in New York.
Environmentalists accuse Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro of allowing deforestation to increase.
Indigenous communities living in the Amazon are also trying to protect their tropical forests and their way of life.
