Finland has recently signed a billion-dollar deal to buy 64 US F-35 fighter jets, the local armed forces announced today.
Anti-radar aircraft are reported to cost the European country, which officially has no military side, $ 9.4 billion.
The planes are in fact an investment for the future as they will not enter service for several years, as Finnish officials have said their flights will start in 2027.
In addition to the 64 fighters, U.S. defense contractor Lockheed Martin will supply maintenance equipment, spare parts and training, the Finnish military said in a statement.
“The goal is for the Finnish F-35 fighter system to have the best possible performance as we approach the 2030s,” the military said in a statement.
By choosing F-35 fighters, Finland rejected alternative options from other manufacturers such as the French Dassault Rafale or the British Eurofighter Typhoon.
The country has remained neutral during the Cold War but has strengthened ties with the west in recent years.
In January, Prime Minister Sanna Marin said her country had no plans to join NATO, but had the right to do so if it wished.
