The threat of an invasion of Ukraine by Russia has increased the importance of US and NATO defense in Eastern Europe. CNN reveals in detail how the North Atlantic Alliance forces are deployed in this part of the old continent.
The American media giant says that NATO has 4 battalions in Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania and Poland, which operate on a rotating basis. Each of the battalions is led by the United Kingdom, Canada, Germany or the United States, and contains troops from several NATO member countries. Last month, the Alliance said all four battalions “are strong and their forces are ready for war.”
Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg said NATO was also ready to further strengthen its presence in Eastern Europe by sending more troops to the area.
Meanwhile, the US has its bases in Lithuania and Romania, along with several bases in Poland. President Joe Biden last week approved the deployment of 3,000 additional troops to Poland, Germany and Romania, while a staff of 8,500 remains on high alert. NATO currently has no troops in Ukraine and has no plans to send troops there, but offers strategic advice to the country.
Other NATO assets in the region include a missile defense system in Romania, designed to “track, capture and destroy” ballistic missiles in the atmosphere.
