Tourism throughout 2020 was one of the sectors hardest hit by the effects of the pandemic but that boosted the domestic holiday, somewhat offsetting the significant drop in foreign inflows.
INSTAT has published the report “Tourism in figures 2020” which provides the main indicators on tourism in Albania, based on two surveys “Holidays and Travel” and “Survey of Accommodation Structures”.
According to the report, in 2020, the entry of foreign nationals in Albania were approximately 2.7 million people or 58.5% less than in 2019, which so far is considered the best year of tourism. The inflows of citizens from the European region account for the largest share of inflows of foreign nationals into the country, accounting for 98.5% of the total.
Tourists from Kosovo were the ones who did not abandon us and kept this sector alive, occupying the highest entry of foreign nationals of 52%, followed by Northern Macedonia with 14%, Greece with 8%, Montenegro with 7% and tourists from Italy by 5%.
This report shows that in 2020 were registered 1.4% more trips for holidays and leisure in Albania, compared to 2019.
The most preferred destinations for travel, personal or business in Albania are Tirana, Vlora and Durrës.
Women account for 50.6% of trips made to Albania, while 49.4% are men.
Travelers aged 25-34 years have recorded the highest percentage of trips made within the country, 22.0%.
“In 2020, the number of trips for personal or business purposes within the country, made by individuals residing in Albania over the age of 15 was 2,920,287. The average number of overnight stays for completed trips is 3.97 nights. Personal travel accounts for 98.8% of total travel, while business travel accounts for 1.2% of them. The highest concentration of domestic travel (personal and business), for 2020 according to the month of departure are recorded in the months: August (18.0%), June (12.9%), January (11.2%) and December (about 10.7%). 28.0% of trips as country of origin have the region of Tirana, 11.2% the region of Elbasan, 9.2% the region of Vlora and 9.1% the region of Shkodra“, The report shows.
The impact of tourism on the economy
INSTAT has made an estimate of the impact of tourism on the economy.
During 2020 in our country came about 2.7 million foreign nationals, whose wishes and needs were met by about 55 thousand employees only in activities directly related to tourism (NACE Rev.2. 2-digit 55; 56 ; 77; 79) which means each employee in these activities served and cared for about 49 foreign visitors.
The added value of mug mug industries has decreased by 33.9%, compared to 2019.
The share of industries directly related to tourism in Gross Domestic Product (GDP) for 2020 is 2.3%.
Accommodation capacity
In 2020, 1,469 accommodation facilities were operational throughout the country (hotels, motels, camps, inns, mountain shelters and other structures for short-term stays) and about 40,000 rooms and about 95,000 beds were made available.
During 2020, the tourism industry has offered on average:
about 33 beds available to 1,000 inhabitants;
50% of beds are used (overnight stays) by non-residents;
maximum capacity was made available during August (about 33 thousand rooms and 81 thousand beds);
the third quarter had the highest bed utilization rate, around 18.4%.
