Adults struggling with their weight may soon be offered a weekly injection to help remove unhealthy fat.
Treatment makes people feel fuller, so they eat less and are less hungry. In trials, used in conjunction with a healthy diet and exercise, he helped obese people lose a tenth of their body weight, about 13 kg on average.
The National Institute for Excellence in Health and Care is recommending that it be made available to the National Health Service, according to BBC.
Obese people should talk to their GP about losing weight safely.
Some manage it only through diet and exercise.
Other treatments include:
orlistat – a pill that stops the body from absorbing some of the fat in food
liraglutide, called Saxenda – a daily injection that makes people feel fuller and less hungry
a gastric band – placed around the stomach to make people feel fuller
a gastric bypass or bariatric surgery to remove or alter part of the digestive system.
Obesity affects about one in four adults in the UK and increases the risk of other serious health conditions.
In 2018-19, 11,117 hospitalizations in England were linked to obesity.
