The President of France wants to fill the vacuum left by German Chancellor Angela Merkel in Europe, but it will not be easy.
When Angela Merkel resigned in December, it was widely rumored that the German chancellor was leaving a vacuum in Europe. Emmanuel Macron now wants to complement it, writes Der Standard in an analysis on Macron’s visit to Russia and Ukraine as part of efforts to resolve the crisis.
Under the auspices of the Presidency of the Council of the EU, he skillfully mediates between the parties and all involved – from Russia and Ukraine to the Baltic states and Poland to the US.
The new French president’s method is to talk to everyone so that the guns do not talk. This sounds simple, but it is actually extremely complicated, just because France itself has an ambivalent attitude towards NATO and raises the “voice of Europe” against it. This is another reason why Vladimir Putin deliberately relies on Macron – in order to be able to divide the western front, writes Der Standard.
According to the Austrian newspaper, President Macron is not naive – he knows that his close friend Vladimir is a player – a bit like him. He also knows that it does not mean much if Putin promised him in Moscow that he “would not be at the origin of an escalation,” in plain language – he would not start a war.
An hour-long press conference between the two in Moscow gives the impression that Putin is good at any means of pressure, including military, to prevent Ukraine from joining NATO. In this regard, the positions of the West and Russia remain completely incompatible. And in this regard, even the Macron methodologist has no way out to offer.
In conclusion, the newspaper Der Standard writes that with a little luck, the Ukraine crisis will not degenerate immediately, but will keep us busy for a long time – Putin has time: he can stay in office until 2036.
