Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has been critical of the Western approach, accusing Western countries of making the Russia-Ukraine crisis “worse”.
He also criticized US President Joe Biden’s approach to the issue, in his comments published by local media.
“Unfortunately, the West has so far made no contribution to resolving this issue. “I can say that they are only making things worse,” Erdogan told reporters as he returned from Ukraine, adding that US President Joe Biden “has not yet been able to show a positive approach.”
While discussions on the Ukraine-Russia crisis have escalated to the highest level, Russian President Vladimir Putin is staying in China, where he has received support from the country’s leaders.
On Friday, February 4, the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, announced that the European Union has prepared a strong package of financial sanctions for Russia.
Leyen said the EU had prepared a “strong and comprehensive package of financial and economic sanctions” if Russia invaded Ukraine.
“This goes from restricting access to foreign capital to export controls, especially for technical goods,” Von der Leyen said, adding that the measures would make the Russian economy “even more fragile.”
Von der Leyen said that the controversial Russian-German gas project known as “Nord Stream 2” could not be excluded from the sanctions.
