Mississippi becomes the 37th state to legalize medical marijuana use, enabling a new form of pain treatment for residents suffering from a range of serious health conditions.
Under the newly signed law, patients can receive about 100 grams of cannabis per month, or 3.5 grams per day.
Patients must be diagnosed by a licensed healthcare professional by qualifying in order to obtain a prescription for medical marijuana, reports nypost.
Conditions include cancer, Parkinson’s disease, Huntington’s disease, muscular dystrophy, Alzheimer’s, autism, post-traumatic stress disorder and severe injuries, the Telegraph reports.
Cannabis can also be described as “a state of pain in which the cause of the pain can not be removed or otherwise treated… and in which no relief or cure of the cause of the pain is possible”.
The legalization of medical marijuana in Mississippi comes after voters in the state overwhelmingly approved a voting measure to create a medical cannabis program in November 2020.
But the previous measure was devalued when the state Supreme Court overturned the entire state voting initiative process.
