Ankara is doing its part to reduce tensions between Kiev and Moscow, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said today, adding that his country is ready to mediate between the two sides.
During his visit to Kiev today, Erdogan reaffirmed his support for Ukraine’s territorial integrity and offered to host a Russia-Ukraine crisis summit.
“Turkey is ready to commit to resolving the crisis between its two friendly and Black Sea neighbors,” Erdogan said after talks with Ukrainian counterpart Volodymyr Zelenskyy, adding that Turkey supports Ukraine’s territorial integrity, including Crimea.
Erdogan suggested that Russian President Vladimir Putin may travel to Turkey after his appearance Friday at the opening ceremony of the Beijing Games.
Ahead of the joint press conference, senior Turkish and Ukrainian officials signed a total of eight economic agreements between the two countries.
Ukraine and Russia have been in conflict since fighting in the Donbas region began in 2014 following Russia’s annexation of the Crimean peninsula.
Russia is already believed to have amassed thousands of troops on the border with Ukraine, fueling fears it could attack the former Soviet republic.
Moscow denies preparing to attack and condemns what it calls “Western media hysteria aimed at artificially increasing tensions in the region.”
