The Prime Minister of Northern Macedonia, Dimitar Kovacevski, is paying his first visit to Brussels since taking office.
He met with NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg and will later meet with senior European Union officials.
The security situation in Europe, especially around Ukraine, as well as the Western Balkans region, were the main topics of conversation between Stoltenberg and Kovachevsky.
The NATO Secretary General has said that the stability of the Western Balkans region is of particular importance to NATO.
He thanked Northern Macedonia for its contribution to the stability of the region, including the contribution of this country to the KFOR mission in Kosovo.
According to Stoltenberg, the meeting also discussed the gathering of Russian forces near Ukraine.
He said Russia had amassed more than 100,000 troops near the border with Ukraine and had recently sent about 30,000 troops to Belarus, making it the largest Russian military base in the country since the end of the Cold War.
NATO continues to call on Russia to reduce tensions, saying any new Russian aggression will face harsh responses and harsh sanctions.
“NATO will not compromise on its basic principles. “It’s the right of every state to choose its own path,” Stoltenberg said.
According to him, the West is “interested in finding political solutions, but we must be ready for the worst.”
The Prime Minister of Northern Macedonia said that his first visit to NATO proves the importance that his country attaches to membership in this alliance.
“Being part of NATO means security, peace and stability, as well as the prosperity of our country and our citizens. NATO’s open door policy was an opportunity for us to achieve our goals and become the 30th member of the alliance. “This step was a reflection of the right to a sovereign decision,” Kovacevski said, expressing his government’s full support for NATO’s sustained policy in the face of Russia’s threats to security and stability in Europe.
