Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said on a television show that they want to have good relations with America, but feel threatened by the expansion of NATO membership.
“In any case of new membership it seems that NATO is extending its line of defense to the east, as it has come closer to Ukraine, even though that country has nothing more to offer in terms of security to the alliance.
We want to have a good relationship, with mutual respect with America and other countries in the world. But, learning from bitter experiences, we do not want to stand in a position in which our safety is endangered every day”.
Lavrov went further with his comments calling NATO a not entirely defensive alliance.
“It’s hard to call it defensive. “Remember that they invaded Libya, breaking the rules of the United Nations Security Council and then the way they were brought to Afghanistan.”
Russia has long disliked the fact that NATO has granted membership to countries that were once part of the former Soviet Union or to its sphere of influence, as members of the Warsaw Pact.
The US and NATO have formally rejected Russia’s demands to stop NATO enlargement, although Washington indicated spaces on which discussions are possible, offering hope for a solution that would avoid war.
Meanwhile, NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg has stated that the alliance will not send troops to help Ukraine if Russia invades it. This applies only to member states, he said, while Ukraine remains only a partner country and as such can only benefit to better mobilize and arm its troops.
