A 20-year-old mother of one child was gang-raped and tortured in India but instead of receiving help from the community she was then drawn into a parade of shame and abuse by the crowds that attacked her.
Police said they have arrested 11 people including nine women and minors after the horrific scenes in Delhi on Wednesday, India.
The young woman was reportedly forcibly taken from her home by four men and raped.
The gang rape is believed to have been an act of revenge by the family of a teenager who was rejected by the girl. The young man reportedly hanged himself in November after the rejection, and was in fact married and had three children.
The boy’s family had previously threatened the young woman, forcing her to move out of the apartment.
The victim’s 18-year-old sister said the young man had fallen in love with her and already his family blames the girl for his death.
“He had fallen in love with her,” she told the local network NewsLaundry.
He would pick her up on the phone and ask her to leave her husband and join him, or she would always refuse.
In the gruesome footage published the raped girl is seen pulling in the middle of the street as the crowd hit and yelled at her.
Commenting on the video, women activist Yogita Bhayana said: “This incident in Delhi has left me speechless. “Some women talked to her for more than an hour, all the women in sight should be arrested.”
Delhi police said they are investigating and will make more arrests soon.
The victim is already believed to be in stable condition and is being protected by police at a home in Delhi.
India is known for its widespread problems with sexual violence, which has come to the fore since the macabre rape of a female student on a bus in Delhi in 2012.
