In recent years, it seems that a second “pandemic” has gripped the world, not excluding Albania: teachers have begun to abandon the education system by resigning.
This is the concern raised by American teacher Angela Barton listing several reasons.
Reasons why teachers resign. Study: Angela Barton (teacher of 25 years)
- Lack of support staff
- Overwhelming stress
- Incomprehensible leaders
- Concerns from Covid
- Students out of control
- Parental pressure
- Curriculum change
- Insufficient salaries
- Lack of support for new teachers
- Work conditions
- Taking responsibility for a student’s failure
- Politics in front of people
- Imbalance of work with personal life
The problems of teachers resemble the same in the Covidian time we are living in, regardless of their origin. Valbona Nathanaili, education expert in Albania explains that despite the days off and job security until retirement, the teacher today is not respected as before, as he faces increased pressure and workload.
Valbona Nathanaili: The covid situation has certainly been affected. The teacher has a low salary and no opportunity for a career in school. Recently he has also been charged with administrative work, to keep notes that have no value but that take up their time and annoy him.
But what are the measures to be taken to stop the shrinking of the educational body ?!
Valbona Nathanaili: Teachers need to be motivated. Today they do not choose the best as branches, it is the last option for them… we as parents demand that everything is done by teachers within the class, it is impossible! The curriculum needs to be expanded and support staff added.
