About 90 tons of “deadly aid” from the United States has reached Ukraine, as tensions are high due to the accumulation of Russian troops along the border with Ukraine.
This was the first shipment of the US military-approved aid package to Ukraine, including ammunition for “front-line defenders” on the front.
The shipment arrived in Ukraine following US Secretary of State Antony Blinken’s visit to Kiev this week, from which he warned of a harsh response if Russia invades Ukraine, the BBC reports.
Moscow has denied any plans to attack or invade Ukraine.
US President Joe Biden in December approved a $ 200 million security bailout package.
The US embassy in Kiev said the shipment demonstrated “the firm commitment of the United States to Ukraine’s sovereign right to self-defense.”
“The United States will continue to provide such assistance to the Ukrainian Armed Forces in its ongoing efforts to protect Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity against Russian aggression,” the US Embassy said in a Facebook post.
Ukrainian Defense Minister Oleksiy Reznikov thanked the United States for its assistance.
The aid shipment came hours after Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov and his US counterpart Blinken held talks aimed at reducing the chances of the conflict escalating in Ukraine.
