Greece has been added to the list of countries where the new sub-variant Omicron 2 has been discovered, which has already spread widely in Denmark and other European countries, but it is not yet known if it behaves differently from the primary Omicron mutation.
According to doctors, what is known is the fact that this new subvariant, remains hidden and is not easily detected by diagnostic tests. His first two cases are a couple of passengers from Egypt who arrived at Eleftherios Venizelos Airport on 13 January.
Once identified as positive, genomic analysis of their samples resulted in the new subvariant and they have completed the seven-day quarantine according to the protocol.
Omicron 2 is the cause that in the last few hours opened a new cycle of concern in the scientific community inside and outside Europe. In Norway, initial estimates consider it even more contagious than the original virus, and in Denmark, half of all new cases have been found with this subvariant.
Meanwhile pandemic indications continue to worry doctors in Greece. In the last 24 hours for the third time within the week there were three-digit number of victims, 108 and in total since the beginning of the pandemic the number of deaths has gone to almost 22,500.
While daily infections have stabilized by nearly 20,000 throughout this week, a third of them are children aged 0-17 years and 90% of them have the Omicron variant. The number of intubated also continues to remain again in alarming figures, 679.
Pandemic specialists estimate that the high number of deaths and intubations belongs to the age group over 70 years, while about 300,000 Greeks of this age group preferred not to be vaccinated and to pay a fine of 100 euros every month.
