A man from the eastern US state of Maryland was found dead today in his home surrounded by more than 100 venomous and non-venomous snakes, authorities said.
Police went to the 49-year-old’s home after a neighbor reported seeing him lying on the floor unconscious when he went to check on him.
Officials had broken down the door to enter as they found the man, who was pronounced dead at the scene. Police said there was no evidence of external factors at the event and the body was transported to forensic offices for autopsy. Officials have not yet released the identity of the deceased.
Police added that they discovered more than 100 snakes of different species inside the house, about which even his neighbors had never heard.
Charles’s animal control officials were working to provide the reptiles with experts from North Carolina and Virginia, police said.
Jennifer Harris, of the animal safety office told the network WUSA9 that more than 125 snakes had been caught and labeled, while adding that neighbors should not worry.
Among the largest snakes was a 5 meter tall Burmese python.
Harris said it was the largest collection of animals he had seen in 30 years of experience.
