Prime Minister Edi Rama has commemorated on the 16th anniversary of the death of Ibrahim Rugova, former President of Kosovo.
He considers the most atypical leader among the prominent in our history, the first president of the other independent state of Albanians.
According to Rama, every year that passes his star rises in the sky of the memory of Albanians.
“On this emotionally charged day of the year, we also remember the great man in the history of Kosovo, the most atypical leader among the prominent in our history, the first president of the other independent state of Albanians, Ibrahim Rugova, who passed away. today 16 years ago, but with each passing year his star grows in the sky of our national memory “, writes Rama.
Rugova passed away on January 21, 2006, after battling lung cancer. He was the first president of Kosovo, serving in 1992–2000 and again in 2002–2006.
Rugova was an intellectual, academic and literary critic, while he was recognized as the leader of the largest peace movement in Europe, the broad movement for emancipation, national liberation and independence of Kosovo.
Based on the Writers’ Association, he was one of the co-founders of the Democratic League of Kosovo, which was the first popular democratic movement to become a party, launching a peaceful campaign against Serbia.
He led a popular struggle for independence, which followed a peaceful resistance to Yugoslav rule, and lobbied for support from the US and Europe, especially during the Kosovo War.
He strongly emphasized the ancient heritage of Dardania, an independent kingdom and later a province of the Roman Empire that included the territory of present-day Kosovo, to strengthen the country’s identity and to promote its policy of close relations with the West.
Due to his role in the history of Kosovo, Rugova has been called “Father of the Nation” and “Gandhi of the Balkans”, and after his death was declared Hero of Kosovo.
