Iranian television today broadcast images of Chinese and Russian warships arriving off the east coast of Iran for three-day maneuvers in the Indian Ocean.
Iran, Russia and China will launch joint maneuvers on Friday aimed at “strengthening joint security,” the Iranian naval commander said.
The announcement coincides with the official visit of Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi to Moscow, who said yesterday that Tehran “has no borders in expanding ties with Russia.”
The maneuvers also come at a time of talks in Vienna on reviving Iran’s international nuclear deal, which also includes China and Russia.
Iranian Admiral Mustafa Tajeddini said the training campaign would include 11 Iranian naval units, three Revolutionary Guard units, three units from Russia and two from China.
He added that the campaign will take place in an area of 17,000 square kilometers north of the Indian Ocean.
Tajedini said the objective was to “expand combat capabilities and readiness, as well as strengthen military ties between the participating countries’ naval forces.”
