A gay couple from Texas were found tortured, shot to death and mutilated near a Mexican border town where a series of violence against women had previously been reported.
The bodies of Julissa Ramírez and Nohemí Medina Martínez were found Sunday in rubbish bins on the outskirts of the town of Ciudad Juárez, across the border from their home in El Paso, the local daily writes. El Diario.
The pair of girls were about 30 years old and reportedly got married last summer. The day before the macabre discovery they had met a family, the newspaper writes.
Ramírez lived in El Paso, whereas Martinez was still resident in Ciudad Juárez, according to data on their Facebook profiles. They were originally from the Mexican city of Chihuahua where they went to visit relatives, writes El Diario.
Local authorities are investigating the murders of 11 women and 50 men in Ciudad Juárez that took place this year, writes El Diario.
The network El Paso’s KVIA wrote that when the victims were found one had died and the other was still in the last throes of life, but died later.
The possible perpetrators or motives of the massacre were not yet known but the city is known for violence or killings against women which local networks call ‘femicide’, according to El Paso Times.
Demonstrators with candles and torches marched in the city streets on Tuesday, demanding justice for women, as well as for women’s rights activist Isabel Cabanillas de la Torre, who was killed two years ago in the city, writes the Texas newspaper.
