A study has found that dementia cases worldwide are expected to triple by 2050.
The scientists, in the study published in the medical journal “Lancet”, assessed dementia based on unhealthy lifestyle, aging and growing population.
In the study, which aims to support states in preventing dementia, data from 195 countries were analyzed. The study also noted that increased rates of obesity, diabetes, smoking and a sedentary lifestyle increase the risk of dementia.
The researchers, noting that the number of dementia cases will not increase by the same level around the world, estimated that from 57 million cases in 2019 this figure could go to over 153 million by 2050. The study predicted that dementia cases in Sub-Saharan East Africa it could increase from about 660,000 to over 3 million, while in North Africa and the Middle East, it could increase from 3 million to about 14 million.
On the other hand, it was noted that dementia cases could increase from 4.8 million to 7.4 million in the Asia-Pacific region, from 8 million to approximately 14 million in Western Europe and from 907 thousand to 1.6 million in Great Britain.
