In his capacity as chair of the EU presidency, French President Emmanuel Macron said Europe wants to find a political response to the conflict in Ukraine and should review its relations with the Western Balkans.
Macron said Wednesday that Europeans need to build their collective security pact and rearm in the face of Russian military moves.
“Security on our continent requires strategic rearmament. As Europeans, we must make our demands and put ourselves in a position to implement them. We must build it among us Europeans, share it with our NATO allies and propose it to Russia for negotiations.He said.
Returning to the Western Balkans, he said the EU should offer countries a “sincere” perspective on membership in the European bloc.
Of the Western Balkan countries, Serbia and Montenegro have made the most progress in EU membership talks. Northern Macedonia and Albania have failed to start membership talks because Bulgaria has vetoed Skopje.
France, which has held the six-month presidency of the EU since January 1, has signaled that the presidency will focus on the Western Balkans region.
