Margarito Martínez Esquivel and José Luis Gamboa are the latest victims of one of the most dangerous places in the world outside the war zones.
The corps of journalists in Mexico has suffered another devastating start to the year after the killing of two journalists who had dared to document the country’s degradation in the spiral of violence fueled by drug trafficking and corruption.
Margarito Martínez Esquivel, a chronicler photographer and journalist who often collaborated with foreign media, was shot dead outside his home in the northern city of Tijuana at noon on Monday.
“Unfortunately there is nothing he can do about it,” said his shocked wife, Elena Martínez. for the daily San Diego Union-Tribune – one of the many international newspapers with which he collaborated, such as the BBC, Los Angeles Times or Washington Post.
Martínez’s death comes a week after another journalist, José Luis Gamboa, was shot to death with a knife in the eastern state of Veracruz, another of the most regions violent Mexico.
Two days earlier Gamboa, the director of a news agency called Inforegio, called for the appointment of an anti-drug figure that could slow down decades of bleeding escalation.
He complained that some parts of the government, instead of fighting drug trafficking, were involved in “a major criminal collaboration” with the cartels. “The Mexican population still does not understand how serious this is,” he wrote Gamboa .
The last two murders, still unexplained – which come after the murder of another journalist last year have sparked outrage in the Latin country.
“It’s shocking to think of these murders happening so close together,” said Jan-Albert Hootsen, a spokesman for Mexico’s Committee to Protect Journalists.

The group said Martínez is the 29th Mexican journalist to be killed since President Andrés Manuel López Obrador came to power in December 2018, promising to “pacify the country.”
