Maltese MEP Roberta Metsola is the new President of the European Parliament. Metsola was elected in the first ballot with 458 pro votes.
As of Monday, Metsola’s election was deemed very likely, as her candidacy received the support of three political groups that are part of the majority in the European Parliament.
She replaces David Sassolin, who passed away on January 11, while still in office. Anyway, Sassoli had arrived at the end of his term.
Metsola is part of the moderate wing of the PPE and in recent years has stood out above all for mediating work with center-right and center-left groups.
Metsola is married to Finnish politician and manager Ukko Metsola, from whom he also took the surname and has four children.
The 43-year-old entered Parliament in 2013 and was one of the first MEPs elected in Malta. Prior to that, she was an expert on European law and from 2012 to 2013 worked as an advisor to the High Representative for European Affairs, Catherine Ashton.
