As you read the book Glory to Catalonia, Spain comes alive before your eyes with cities, mountains and people; the writer’s sufferings and joys become yours too. His sufferings from the cold in the trenches fill the body with chills while the sadness of not smoking amidst the stress of war makes you feel it down to the bone marrow. So lighting a cigarette, if you are lucky enough to have it, is a relief from endless anxiety.
The writer’s hope for an equal society fills you with hope and desire for life. But the reality is quite different. While standing in the trenches, mostly doing nothing valuable for democracy, as he describes his participation in the war, George Orwell is shot in the neck by a bullet fired by a sniper from fascist trenches.
Orwell’s description of his injury is such that your hand instinctively goes to your neck so that the bullet does not hit you yourself while reading.
The satire used by Orwell is genius. He uses it as a weapon on a false world including himself. This humor often resembles the satirical language used in the novel The Good Soldier Schweik.
