Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said today that he was “optimistic” about the progress in the negotiations for the return to force of the international nuclear agreement with Iran.
The minister said he felt “cautious optimism” in talks to revive the 2015 accord between Iran and the six world powers.
“There has been progress, mainly between Iran and the United States. “He wants to understand the specific concerns and how to include them in the full package.”
The 2015 agreement between Iran and world powers US, France, Britain, Russia, China and Germany, lifted sanctions on Tehran in exchange for a reduction in its nuclear program.
But the US unilaterally withdrew from the agreement in 2018 and reinstated severe economic sanctions.
Talks on his resurrection began last year but stalled in June following the election of conservative Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi.
After a difficult resumption of negotiations in November, Iran said this week that it had seen “relatively satisfactory progress.”
But this week France said discussions were “slow”, while the US said “there are only a few weeks left” to save the accord.
