Australian authorities reported temperatures reaching 50.7 degrees Celsius on Thursday, equaling the 1962 record.
This high temperature was reported in Onslou, Western Australia, while the record of previous years was recorded in the south of Australia. Onslow and surrounding regions could record record temperatures again, as the weather is expected to be even hotter on Friday. Western Australia faced major fires last month. As a result, over 6,000 hectares of land have been burned and many people have been evacuated from their homes.
In addition to Onslout, other towns such as Mardi and Robërn recorded temperatures above 50 degrees Celsius on Thursday. Heat waves are becoming more and more extreme, due to man-made climate change. The world has warmed by 1.2 degrees Celsius since the start of the industrial age, and temperatures are expected to rise again unless the world’s most powerful nations take action to stem global warming.
