After nearly two weeks of closure due to unrest, Kazakhstan’s main aviation center, Almaty Airport, has resumed operations.
The statement of TAV Airports, the company that manages the facility, states that as a first step, the airport will be served from 08:00 to 21:00 local time.
“In cooperation with the Kazakh authorities, we have ensured the safety of our passengers and employees,” said Sani Şener, TAV CEO.
The well-known Turkish airport operator, TAV Airports, took over operations at Almaty Airport in May 2021.
“With the normalization of daily life in the country, flight traffic will recover quickly,” said Wenner.
The statement said Air Astana, Flydubai, Scat, Qazak Air and Nordwind airlines had flights from the airport this morning.
The southeastern province of Almaty, the country’s former capital, is a strategic junction alongside China’s massive One Belt One-Road project, which aims to build trade routes with West Asia, Europe and Africa.
Last week, Kazakhstan’s President Kassym-Yomart Tokayev declared a state of emergency in response to protests over rising fuel prices.
He then sought help from the Collective Security Treaty Organization, a Russian-led military bloc that sent troops to quell the unrest.
Almaty Airport, the main base of domestic airline Air Astana, served 6.1 million passengers in 2021.
