Boris Johnson is facing calls from conservatives to resign as prime minister after admitting to attending a party where alcohol was consumed, at a time when the country was in isolation as a result of outbreaks of covid infections.
The Prime Minister apologized for the way he handled the event in Downing Street Garden in 2020 and said that he understood the “rage” of the public for him.
Cabinet members, including Deputy Prime Minister Dominic Raab, sided with Johnson, but Scottish Conservative leader Douglas Ross and MPs William Wragg, Caroline Nokes and Roger Gale urged him to step down.
“He is the prime minister, it is his government that set these rules and he must be held accountable for his actions,” said one of the deputies.
Ministers, meanwhile, have urged lawmakers to await the outcome of an investigation by senior official Sue Gray into alleged Covid rule violations on the Downing Street holidays, which they say will be published soon.
