The Permanent Council of the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE) meets in Vienna on Thursday to discuss recent tensions following the gathering of Russian troops on the border with Ukraine.
This will be the third meeting this week on the issue, as earlier the United States and NATO, in separate meetings, met with Russian representatives.
Moscow and Washington have already highlighted their “substantial” differences over European security during talks earlier this week.
The US ambassador to the OSCE said no progress was expected during the January 13 meeting.
“I do not think there will be any concrete results this week. “Our main goal is to have a dialogue,” said Ambassador Michael Carpenter.
“Yes, the positions are opposite, but that does not mean that there are no elements and topics on which we can not agree,” he added for Russian independent television, Dozhd.
According to Carpenter, the challenge lies in determining how to deepen the dialogue “on this issue in the coming months or even next year.”
The OSCE meeting will be attended by all 57 member states.
The meeting comes as Moscow has amassed about 100,000 troops near the border with Ukraine. The West has expressed concern that Russia may be preparing to invade Ukraine.
On the other hand, Moscow has presented its security demands, which are related to stopping NATO enlargement from the east, and Russia is seeking guarantees that Ukraine will not become part of the North Atlantic Alliance./ REL
