North Korean leader Kim Jong Un has monitored the hypersonic missile test and again called for the strengthening of the North Korean military, state media KCNA reported on January 12.
“After watching the test on January 11, Kim called on scientists to step up efforts to strengthen the military, both in terms of quality and numbers,” the North Korean news agency reported.
According to the agency, the rocket was carrying hypersonic equipment and hit the target at sea, at a distance of 1,000 kilometers.
This is the second test of a hypersonic rocket in less than a week.
Kim has made statements about strengthening the military, at a time when negotiations to disarm the Korean Peninsula by nuclear weapons are stalled.
The missile test has been condemned by the United States and the European Union.
US State Department spokeswoman Ned Price said the missile launch violated UN Security Council resolutions, while US Undersecretary of State for Political Affairs Victoria Nuland called the test “dangerous and destabilizing.”
“This leads us in the wrong direction,” she said in Washington.
“As you know, the United States has said that the new administration is open to dialogue with North Korea, to the coronavirus, to humanitarian aid, while they are launching missiles.”
The European Union (EU) has called the recent missile launch a “threat to international peace and security” and called on Pyongyang to return to diplomacy.
According to reports, this is the third launch of a hypersonic missile from North Korea.
The first was released in September last year, while the second last week.
Hypersonic weapons are considered the new generation of weapons and many powerful armies, including the United States, Russia and China, have already tested them.
They are faster than ballistic missiles and have the capacity to evade current defense systems.
