The 58 positive cases confirmed Monday by the coronavirus have been enough to block more than 5 million people in China.
Health authorities imposed restrictions on the city of Anyang as part of a so-called “zero-Covid strategy” that China has been pursuing for weeks, with entire cities blocked after identifying a few cases with Covid-19. This strategy was introduced in the most critical moments of the pandemic, when it was attempted to eliminate any risk of spreading the infection.
Anyang, located in Henan province, is the third-largest city where a blockade has been imposed in recent weeks, following the discovery of several cases of coronavirus. The first city to be blocked was Xi’an, home to 12 million people and located in Shaanxi province, while the second city is Yuzhou, which has a population of 1.2 million and is located in Henan province. In total, there are almost 20 million people in isolation in China.
Anyang residents have been ordered not to leave their homes, except in exceptional cases. It is currently unclear how long the blockage will last.
However, the most troubling situation is that of Tianjin, a large city about 100 kilometers from Beijing, where an explosion was recorded at a school and where two people were found infected as a result of the Omicron variant. At the moment this city is not blocked, while the Covid test has been imposed to be carried out by its 15 million inhabitants.
The cases uncovered in Tianjin are troubling because of the city’s proximity to Beijing and the approach of Chinese New Year on February 1, where hundreds of millions of citizens travel within the country to meet with their relatives. Another problem is the organization of the Beijing Winter Olympics, which are expected to start on February 4.
