A strong earthquake measuring 5.3 on the Richter scale according to the Athens Geodynamic Institute was recorded in Florina at 21.43 on Sunday evening.
The quake had its epicenter 3 km west of the city of Florina at a depth of 14.3 km. It was felt in many areas of northern Greece, in the province of Western Macedonia, Central to Thessaloniki, but also further south to the cities of Trikallas and Larissa.
The strong earthquake was followed within ten minutes by at least 5 more tremors from 2.9 to 4.1 on the Richter scale. The media of Northern Macedonia also report that this strong earthquake was felt in many areas of Greece’s northern neighbor as far as Skopje, even as far as Bulgaria.
About 30 minutes after the main earthquake, there were no calls for help or reports of damage to the fire departments, which is confirmed by the local police.
Many frightened Florida residents have left their homes. According to the first evidence, the earthquake had a great duration and was accompanied by noise.
“It is too early to draw conclusions,” said Gerasimos Houliaras, director of seismic research at the Athens Observatory’s Geodynamic Institute.
Seismologists expect the development of seismic activity and the phenomenon, while emphasizing that this area does not enter those that are regularly hit by earthquakes.
