Adam McKay’s satirical film, “Don’t Look Up,” a reflection of how humanity is responding to climate destruction, is breaking the viewing record in Netflix history.
In its first two days of release, the film garnered 111.3 million views and debuted on Netflix’s list of the top 10 movies in 94 countries. Now the film ranks third as the most watched of all time on the platform.
“Don’t Look Up” tells the story of astronomy student Kate Dibiasky, played by actress Jennifer Lawrence and her doctoral advisor, Dr. Randall Mindy, played by Leonardo DiCaprio. This is a film about how humanity is responding to the devastating climate that is killing the planet.
The panic and despair they feel reflects the panic and despair that many climate scientists feel. The satirical film featuring a cast of great actors including Meryl Streep, Jonah Hill, Cate Blanchett and Timothee Chalamet first hit theaters on December 10 before debuting on Netflix on December 24.
Director McKay is actually best known for his films with Will Ferrell as “Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby”, “Step Brothers” and “Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy”, but has recently focused on comedy dramas like “Vice”, “The Big Short” and now, “Don’t Look Up”.
