The highest mountain volcano in the Galapagos archipelago has erupted, releasing rivers of lava and a giant cloud of ash over the Pacific Ocean, the Ecuadorian Geophysical Institute has confirmed.
Clouds of gas and ash from Vuk volcano have risen to nearly 3,800 meters above sea level after the eruption that started at midnight, said sources from this institute.
The Ecuadorian Emergency Operations Committee said the new eruption on Isabella Island, the largest in the archipelago, posed no threat to residential areas. However, the environment ministry claimed that eight people, including national park rangers and scientists, had been evacuated from the area.
The Ecuadorian government council responsible for the Galapagos announced that the emergency committee will continue to monitor the volcano to see in which direction the lava is flowing.
